Don’t let the ridiculously silly Rabbids fool you. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a terrific tactical game that can and will kick your ass if you’re not careful. Fortunately, the game also offers you a wide variety of mechanics and tools that come together in complex and satisfying ways. Here’s what you need to know.

It’s called Mario PLUS Rabbids with reason…

Sparks of hope lets you choose your team, and technically, you can only rotate with members of the original Mario cast if you want. But if you’re not surrendering to the absurdity of the Rabbids, what are you even doing here? The best team is the one that does what it says on the tin.

But you should try different characters

It’s easy to stick with what you know, especially if it works. But each new character you acquire has different abilities that can be useful in the particular battle you’re in. Maybe you’re struggling to survive, in which case a healer might be the way to go. Maybe this battle requires you to get to the end of the map as fast as possible, so your mobile characters are important now. Don’t keep using the character just because; the game levels as you go. Plus, you might discover a new favorite. Just because you don’t like the way someone plays is no excuse, as the game allows you to undo any points you spend!

Change the weight if necessary

Rabbids has an open world where you can traverse a map full of characters, curiosities and secrets. It is possible to enter a level before you are ready for it. And frankly, some levels are just plain hard! When you start a battle, the game asks if you want to adjust the difficulty. If you find you’re having trouble, there’s no shame in tweaking the experience so you’re having fun instead of repeatedly banging your head against the wall.

Set waypoints

When you open your map, you can see where the characters are, along with levels and other useful landmarks. You can highlight each one and press it so the radar tells you where to go to start your search. Some places will also allow you to fast travel after you select them as well.

Explore the world

You can proceed to the next mission, but it would be futile. One of the most charming things Sparks is that Ubisoft has filled the game to the brim with little details and secrets, whether it’s silly dialogue, red coin challenges, or blue coin levels. Some of it the game will mark on your map when you walk past it, even if you didn’t realize it was there. Other things you’ll want to remember because you won’t be able to interact with them the first time you see them. But you won’t see it at all if you don’t walk.

Later in the game, you unlock the ability to scan things. You’ll want to scan the swirls on the ground, footprints, shimmering, invisible objects, and cracked walls with your trusty robot friend Beep-o if you want to get through it thoroughly.

Prepare yourself before the battle

First off, you should always stop by the shop before going into battle so you can go in with enough mushrooms and such. Once you’re on the pre-battle screen, you can look at your enemies and their weaknesses, and change your gear as you see fit. Just as you experiment with different characters, you should feel comfortable switching Sparks as needed.

It might be tempting to tell the game to heal your characters for that small fee, but I encourage you to take a little gamble. Can you heal early? Do you think you can beat the level without taking much damage and just enjoy the rejuvenation after the match? Eventually, you’ll unlock the ability to revive. Don’t waste money just because you have it.

You spend money, that’s why you have it

lol ok but HEAR ME, you save money for other things! Instead of paying money for healing, you can instead stock up on things like POW blocks and reset timers that instantly regenerate your abilities. Healing is a built-in mechanic, but it’s not everything. Save your money for things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. By the same token, you should use your items instead of hoarding them until they’re no longer useful.

Throw your enemies AND friends

You’ll want to move your characters as far as possible while still being in range of each other so they can jump and slide to new areas (or heights). Beware of falling damage – if you step into the pit, it will hurt! But you can also fly into things like Bob-ombs, activate them, and then throw them at other baddies to blow them all up. You should always run on every turn and watch out for pipes and other transportation shortcuts, but if you can dash, slide, teleport, and throw it away, that’s even better.

Be careful with your shots

Characters like Mario, for example, will shoot twice. Killing an enemy sometimes requires you to redirect your shot back to the first guy, as it automatically finds another target for the second shot. Unless, of course, you’re not for sure that you have a clean hit and want to get two targets. However, don’t assume that just because you pull the trigger you’re going to hit. Sometimes it’s best to double tap to kill something rather than just hurt two enemies and kill none.

Line of sight is important

For the record, how this works may be obvious. If you can’t see it, you can’t hit it. But it’s also important for things like dashes and abilities. If you’re not standing in the right place, it’s possible for your dash to miss the entire Goomba line, so make sure the game says that your enemies are actually going to take damage, not just that they’re currently on target. However, don’t be discouraged if you don’t have access to the enemy. Destroy the barriers and leave them open!

Know your attack priority

If you make your main attack, that’s it. You can’t do anything else. Your secondary ability can sometimes overwhelm other choices, so pay attention to what does what.

Play the objective

At the beginning of the fight, Sparks of hope will tell you that you need to reach a certain part of the map, or that you need to defeat a certain enemy. Do not ignore the directive. The map will probably start to swarm with enemies that weren’t there before, which can be scary, and you’ll probably want to take care of that. But the level ends as soon as you meet the requirements, so it doesn’t matter how outnumbered you are by that point. Everything else is a distraction that can doom you to an impossible fight, and restarting the match can be a big hassle.

Good luck there!
