Major League Baseball forced Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado stop using the illegal maple bat after the first game of the World Series on Friday, reports the New York Post. The bat was deemed illegal for safety reasons rather than competitive reasons – the specific type of maple bat Maldonado used was more likely to break into multiple pieces.

Maldonado was given illegal maple bats Albert Pujolshis former teammate in 2017-18 Los Angeles Angels. These maple bats were created for players who started their careers before 2011, such as Pujols, but not for those who came along after the rule change, such as Maldonado, who made his big league debut in September 2011. Maple bats are still used league-wide, albeit with updated standards and specifications.

It is unclear whether Maldonado used illegal maple bats in previous postseason series. He went 1 for 3 in the loss in Game 1 and drove in a run. Maldonado was 4 for 17 (.235) this postseason entering Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday.

A defensive No. 1 catcher, Maldonado compiled a .186/.248/.352 batting line with 15 home runs during the regular season. His work with the pitching staff is so highly regarded that it’s the trade deadline Christian Vazquez was transferred to reserve duty this October.

Maldonado used a different bat in Game 2 on Saturday.
