‘A surprise’: Colton Herta broke silence and spoke of Red Bull interest
Red Bull He would have put everything in place for Pierre Gasly to become an Alpine driver for the 2023 Formula 1 season. The Frenchman would take the place that Fernando Alonso left free and will definitively leave the structure of the Austrians. However, before confirming this decision, the team needs to be sure who their replacement at AlphaTauri will be. All guns are pointed at Colton Herta, although the American is not eligible for a super license under the current FIA points system.
Who spoke first in the interest of Red Bull it was Colton Herta himself. The Andretti IndyCar driver mentioned he was surprised by the interest from the Milton Keynes team and did not expect to receive any approaches from Formula 1 teams.
“When I found out about the interest it was a surprise as I didn’t think it was on anyone’s radar,” he said in a dialogue with ‘Motorsport’. Herta has conducted a private test with McLaren in the past, but still admitted the AlphaTauri call took him by surprise. “Everyone at McLaren seemed very happy with how the tests went and with their physical and mental preparation. I think that helped. But yeah, I was a bit surprised to hear about the interest from AlphaTauri” , he added.
In the interest of Red Bull For Colton Herta, several teams were against the FIA making an exception to give the 2022-year-old American a super license. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali toed that line and also ensured the process had to be followed. The IndyCar driver gave his opinion on the matter and maintained that he understood this position.
“I really understand both sides of the argument, the FIA wants to protect its promotion system,” Herta said. “But I think IndyCar deserves a bit more recognition and to be a bit more divided than it is now between F3 and F2,” he said. Finally, he said that a waiver to obtain his super license would not pose a risk for the future.
The only condition for letting Gasly out
Christian Horner, team leader of Red Bull, assured that the arrival of Colton Herta at AlphaTauri would be the only way by which Pierre Gasly would have the path traced to move to Alpine. “Pierre is doing a good job. So I don’t think there would be a desire for change if there wasn’t an attractive option available,” he said.
On the other hand, the director of austrian team He mentioned that Herta is an “exciting talent” and said his arrival would be important to tap into the US market. “Having a successful American driver could be very interesting. It could be interesting for us, in the long run,” he said.
