A young Raleigh Christmas Parade performer dies after being hit by an out-of-control truck; driver charged | Fatal accident at the parade
RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — Police in Raleigh have confirmed that a girl who was accidentally struck by a truck pulling a float during the Raleigh Christmas Parade has died.
Police said the crash happened around 10:14 a.m. near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue when the driver said he lost control of the truck. He hit the child at low speed, police said.
Despite life-saving efforts, the child died. Other participants in the parade were not injured.
The driver, Landen Christopher Glass, 20, faces charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.
People said they heard the driver shouting through the window of the truck that he had lost control and could not stop the vehicle.
“I just saw them coming down the street really fast and you can tell it wasn’t like gas, like they didn’t turn off, it was rolling, kind of rolling down the street. They were freaking out, yelling at people to get out. as you can tell that were panicking,” said parade goer Melissa Stephens.
A group of people, including some first responders, ran to the truck pulling the float to try to stop it.
“People came over and helped grab him, slow him down a little bit. They were trying to slow him down when it got to this point,” John Jones said.
Christy Curtis, Owner, CC & Company Dance Complex released a statement Saturday night:
“We are heartbroken. Our dance family is a close-knit group and our hearts are broken today. We are working closely with authorities as they determine what happened and why.”
Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said her heart ached for the girl injured in the parade. She expressed it sadness in a post on Twitter.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a young girl who lost her life today at the Raleigh Christmas Parade. Our prayers are with her family, friends and CC dancers & Co. The community is here for you as we try to understand and process this shared tragedy.”
Governor Roy Cooper issued a statement twitter expressing condolences to the family.
“Kristin and I are devastated by the tragedy at today’s Raleigh Christmas Parade. In the joyous season of what should be a happy day, we instead grieve for this family and their friends while keeping them in our prayers. – RC”
“Our hearts and prayers are with the family right now and just everyone who was with this event. That’s all we can do is ask people to pray right now and lift them up,” Shop Local’s Jennifer Martin said. Raleigh.
Raleigh Police Statement on the Incident:
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and those who witnessed this tragic incident. The victim’s family has requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
The Raleigh Christmas Parade has been officially canceled due to the incident.
