Andreescu apologizes after messing up grease with dress change

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu apologized to his godfather Nike for a blast on the pitch after his wardrobe choice for Monday’s first-round game got him in trouble in windy conditions.

Andreescu was on the pitch from the stand to play against the French Harmony Tan, but the wind blew her skirt up again and again, and with her flight it affected her blows. The 22-year-old Canadian approached the chair umpire asking for a break for an extra bathroom to change into the unexpected situation.

“Won’t this count as one of my (toilet break) changes? I mean it’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault,” he said to the referee.

“This dress is so, so bad…I have to go (change). It’s really bad,” she said, unaware that she was attacking her sponsor in a perfectly audible conversation through the microphone of the referee.

Andreescu came back in a white Nike tank top and short skirt to eventually beat Tan 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

“It was just to annoy me on some forehands. Obviously the wind didn’t help,” he told reporters.

“But I didn’t want to disrespect what I said to the referee. I was trying to talk him out of taking one of my bathroom breaks because I know we only have two. He was very nice to say that (which he asked for) I was completely.”

“I certainly could have used different language. So I apologize to everyone I disrespected. I love Nike and hope I can be with them for the rest of my life,” he said. he proclaimed to defuse the situation with his sponsor.

Andreescu will face Beatriz Haddad Maia on Wednesday in the second round.
