At least nine people were injured in Philadelphia, four of them critically, after multiple gunmen opened fire on a crowd Saturday night, police said.

The shooting in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia happened around 10:45 p.m., when several people got out of a vehicle and opened fire on a group of people.

The shooting happened outside a bar in the north end of Philadelphia. NBC Philadelphia reported.

The killers, who police say were three or four, fled in the same car. At least 40 pieces of ballistic evidence were found at the scene, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Nine victims, all adults between the ages of 23 and 40, were taken to hospital, police said.

The motive was not known on Sunday. Police said it appears the attackers saw someone they were chasing and began shooting, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Deputy Police Commissioner John Stanford told a briefing on Saturday that there was a strong police presence in the area.

“We have some brazen individuals who don’t care how many police are here and how many people are here,” he said.

Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted: “I am horrified and devastated by this despicable, brazen act of armed violence. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of those injured, as well as everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
