Biden suggests that voting Republican is a threat to democracy

President Biden urged Democrats on Wednesday to show up at the polls during next week’s midterm elections or “allow dark forces hungry for power” to dismantle American democracy.

Biden invited a crowd of supporters to a Democratic National Committee event inside Union Station in Washington, DC to not take the election for granted. The president argued that Democrats must show up at the polls because Republicans cannot be entrusted with political power.

“We are facing a defining moment,” Biden said. “We must speak with one overpowering, united voice, as a country, and say that there is no place in America for voter intimidation or political violence.”

During his remarks, Biden drew heavily on past rhetoric, presenting the midterms as an opportunity to push back against GOP political extremism.

“It is estimated that there are more than 300 of them [GOP] Election deniers are on the ballot across America this year,” Biden said. “It’s not about me… It’s about the durability of our democracy.”

Biden’s comments come less than a week later House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was violently attacked in San Francisco, California. Although the motive for the attack remains uncertain, Democrats have been quick to claim it for years The GOP’s criticism has drawn Pelosi and her family targets.

“This violence against Democrats, Republicans and nonpartisan officials who are just doing their jobs is the result of lies told for power and profit,” Biden said. “Lies are repeated over and over again to create a cycle of anger, hatred, bitterness and even violence.”

Recent polls show that voters, however, are not buying the rhetoric in the middle 40-year high inflation. Although Biden’s approval rating has rebounded in recent weeks, a Fox News poll this month found Republicans leading Democrats among likely voters on the congressional ballot.

The same poll found that 89% of voters said they were extremely concerned about inflation and higher prices, while only 74% said the same about the country’s lingering political divisions.

“Joe Biden promised unity, but instead demonized and smeared Americans while making life more expensive for everyone,” said Ronna Romney McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee. “While Republicans remain focused on the issues that matter most to voters, Biden and the Democrats are floundering in recent days because they have lost touch with the concerns of families struggling to survive.”
