Chicago shooting: 13 shot, including 3 children, in drive-by shooting, police say
At least 13 people were killed in a shooting in Chicago on Monday night, police said.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. when a crowd gathered at the corner of California Avenue and Polk Street, Chicago Police Chief David O’Neal Brown said.
One person was also hit by a car at the scene, Brown said at a news conference.
Police earlier said 14 people had been killed, but revised the number to 13 in a statement early Tuesday.
The victims include children, including a three-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, according to a police statement.
The victims were transported to several area hospitals in conditions ranging from non-life-threatening to critical, the superintendent said.
A group of people were meeting on the corner for a vigil when the shooting happened, Brown said.
“There may have been others gathered for other reasons,” Brown added. “It’s a very, you know, communal corner where people gather and have different meetings and gatherings.”
Two people traveling in a dark SUV opened fire on those on the corner and then drove off, police said in a statement.
Investigators have obtained video footage of the scene, which shows the shooting happened within seconds, Brown said.
He encouraged anyone who knows about the incident to contact the police or leave an anonymous tip CPD Tips.
