Elon Musk took Twitter workers’ ‘Vacation Days’
- Elon Musk has begun imposing his more demanding style on Twitter workers.
- “Days off” were implemented in 2020 under the leadership of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.
- Musk has already called for a 24/7 work culture as he moves to overhaul Twitter.
Twitter employees are losing extra days off in another change to their work culture under Elon Musk management, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Thursday, employees began noticing that regular company-wide days off — called “vacation days” — were removed from their calendars, two people with knowledge of the company told Insider.
Meanwhile, the people said there has been “absolutely zero” communication from the company’s top management since Musk took over — about days off or anything else. Employees are left to ask their managers directly about calendar changes, the people said. Eventually, some managers confirmed that there were no more “rest days,” the people said.
A company representative did not respond to a request for comment. Bloomberg previously reported days were taken away.
“Days of rest” were implemented at Twitter in 2020 during the first peak of the pandemic, under previous CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey. He encouraged employees to avoid burnout and to designate days each week in which they did not have meetings.
As part of that effort, the company also introduced one “day off” each month where the entire company took a day off. This was in addition to all holidays or individual days off.
Musk’s leadership style is not one that seeks to avoid burnout. Workers at Tesla and SpaceX are known to work exhausting hours while the billionaire tries to guess lofty goals. The CEO has said yes in the past slept in the Tesla factory and worked 120 hour weeks to meet his goals.
Some employees are already working late at Twitter on weekends — and some have even spent the night in the office to keep up with Musk’s demands.
He ordered people working on “Elon-critical projects,” such as obtaining new subscription model to verification, to work “literally 24/7” and in 12-hour shifts around the world to get the job done on incredibly short notice, according to an internal memo seen by Insider. In general, people are expected to work to “maniac” tempo and directly present Musk with new “cool” ideas, if they want to keep their jobs.
In another move away from Dorsey’s leadership style, the billionaire also plans to end Twitter’s telecommuting policy, he said Bloomberg report On Wednesday. Musk made a similar move in June at Tesla when he ordered workers to return to the office full-time or quit. Twitter was one of the first big tech companies to declare work from home policy “forever” in 2020
Even with the new amount of effort and forced productivity, thousands of Twitter employees are expected to lose their jobs, along with the C-suite and many senior managers. which already is. As reported by Insidermore than 3,700 people have been selected at the company for layoffs, which are expected to take place on Friday.
