F1 – Italian GP 2022: “Russell quickly becomes the leader of Mercedes”
Lewis Hamilton got very angry with his team on the radio after they failed to stop him in the pits in the final laps of the Dutch Grand Prix. There was Safety Car and many decided to change tyres. They kept him away with means that turned out to be very worn; Russell entered and finished on the podium despite the fact that by the time the safety car exited he was behind the Briton.
For Jacques Villeneuve this means that some changes may take place within the team. “I see a change within Mercedes,” said the 1997 world champion in his column for Formula1.nl, according to ‘PlanetF1’. “Russell quickly becomes the leader of Mercedes”, adds after recent events. It is true that he is ahead of Hamilton in the World Championship and race after race shows that it has not cost him dearly to adapt to the car.
“He made the decision himself to go for the soft tyres. Lewis, with all his experience and his championships, could have done the same“, He argues in reference to the famous stop which blew up the seven-time world champion on the radio.
“I was amazed by the outburst”
Villeneuve was not very amused by the reaction of the Briton to his team when he saw that not only the victory, but also the podium, eluded him. The move went badly for him and his strategists, and he ended up offloading his own.
Then he lowered his voice just as Toto Wolff asked him to please sort things out behind closed doors. “I was surprised by the explosion of Lewis Hamilton in the race and especially for the way he did it”, assumes the world champion in his column.
He thinks they were not the correct forms. “It was aggressive, almost insulting”he argues, so he rejoices in the fact that “Excuse me, but it’s not like a champion. After all the team means to him, you shouldn’t talk to them like that.”
