Falcons fumble on wild run sets up Chargers K Cameron Dicker for his 2nd game winner with 2 different teams

The Los Angeles Chargers and Atlanta Falcons are notorious for finding wildly creative ways to lose games.

Something had to give on Sunday.

Both teams did their best to cough up the win with the score of the game in the final minute of regulation. The The Chargers ended up winning, 20-17 after a wild sequence that included two fumbles that set up rookie Cameron Dicker for his second game-winning field goal of the season — for his second team.

The Chargers were set up for a much less chaotic victory as they faced a third-and-4 with 46 seconds left. With the game tied at 17-17 and the Falcons running out of timeouts, the Chargers simply needed to keep possession to run out the clock and set up the game-winning field goal attempt.

They did not keep control of the ball. Austin Thank you picked up two yards on a run from Atlanta’s 22-yard line, but fumbled the ball just before his knee hit the turf. Falcons defensive end Ta’Quon Graham scooped up the loose ball and then rumbled 19 yards to set up Atlanta for its potential game-winner. His game suffered the same fate as Ekeler’s – only his fumble was unforced.

Graham simply dropped the ball to the turf as he approached midfield, and the Chargers recovered.

Replay upheld the two-fumble field decisions that ultimately led to the Chargers keeping possession for a net loss of 19 yards. Justin Herbert he picked up again and then something on a 21-yard pass to Josh Palmer on the next play. The gain eventually set Dicker up for a 37-yard field goal attempt to win the game.

He converted, and the Chargers leave Atlanta with a 20-17 victory.

Dicker kicked in place of the injured Chargers kicker Dustin Hopkinswhich remains remained on the side due to a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old rookie from Texas makes a strong case for a full-time job.

Dicker’s only NFL experience came in Week 5 as a fill-in Philadelphia Eagles. As he did on Sunday, he made both his extra points and field goal attempts, including field goals game winner vs Arizona Cardinals that earned him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

The Chargers will likely move back to Hopkins once he is healthy. In a league that is constantly changing players, Dicker’s next NFL shot shouldn’t be long.
