FIFA convinced Qatar to sell alcohol in stadiums

The organizers of world football in Qatar they agreed rules to sell alcoholic beer to ticketed spectators three hours before and one hour after the final whistle, but not during the game in stadiums in Muslim-majority countries.

The Fifa said on Saturday that fans will be able to buy beer Budweiser with alcohol in the eight host stadiums, but not in the concessions located on the access street, before and after the matches, and at night only during the official “Fan Festival”, which will be held in a central park in Doha.

Tickets promising access to champagne, wine, spirits and beer in the stadiums for hotel guests are on sale from February 2021 as part of business packages offering “premium drinks”.

The beer rules that affect fans the most were announced 11 weeks before the opening game and have since fulfilled an expectation Qatar began its campaign 12 years ago to be the premier venue for a world in the Middle-East.

Budweiser was the exclusive beer of world cups since 1986, and its parent company AB Inbev has renewed its contract with Fifa in 2011 until 2022.

Fifa says Saturday it will be sold Budweiser with alcohol “within the perimeter of the stadium before kick-off and after the final whistle”.

“Inside the stadium, ticket holders will have access to non-alcoholic Budweiser Zero,” the world football governing body said. “At the FIFA Fan Festival, Budweiser will be available for purchase from 6:30 p.m.”

The Qatari organizing committee and AB InBev declined to comment on the matter on Saturday.

Access to alcoholic beverages is higher in Qatar than in other Middle Eastern countries. They are served in hotel restaurants and licensed bars. Outside these premises, consumption is illegal.
