Gasly’s nightmares with Ricciardo’s rear wing

The abandonment of Ricardo due to engine problems on the final stage of the Italian Grand Prix was a relief for Pierre Gasly. The AlphaTauri rider didn’t have the best start to the weekend in Monza, since he was not feeling well on Thursday.
However, he was able to recover and on Saturday, he qualified in ninth position (although he eventually started fifth, thanks to penalties from the rest of the drivers). French crossed the finish line in eighth placescoring points for the second time in the last eight races, after a ninth-place finish at Spa.
“I’m very happy with the result,” said the Frenchman. “We got off to a good start and battled with a McLaren for most of the race,” he added.
“I’m not going to lie, I’m probably going to have nightmares about Daniel’s rear wing in the next few days because I spent a lot, a lot, a lot of time glued to it. Gasly was frustrated of not being able to move forward, but recognized that Ricardo he had defended himself well.
“It was actually a race against myself, because I was getting so angry inside the helmet. I was fuming. I tried as hard as I could. And yeah, I was trying to put him under pressure for him to make a mistake.”
“He didn’t, he had a very, very clean race from him. We tried, and at least I know we gave it our all. We tried everything, and we got big points, which is something that has always felt good.”
His career was also compromised by a slow pit stop: “I have to check exactly what happened. I don’t know if it cost us a position, because I saw that the front left tire change was a bit slow, and then I went out very close to Daniel. I need to see exactly what happened there.”
gaseous had no problem with that the race ended under the safety caralthough he thinks any “hook” on the restart could have given him positions.
“I’m not going to lie, for my part, if I look at it purely selfishly, I worked hard and Lando [Norris, por delante] went with a new app. So I had more to lose than to gain, but at the same time I told myself that if the race was restarted, to know who was in front, to know that when you drive a Ferrari on this circuit and you have a chance of winning the race, I know there could have been a lot of sparks at Turn 1, and maybe we could have benefited from that.”
“I was prepared for both scenarios. But they decided not to do it again. I don’t know why. I think there were a few drivers who ended up unhappy last year. [en Abu Dhabi] when they started again one lap from the end. This time there are a few pilots unhappy that they didn’t restart. So it always depends on how you look at it.”
Asked by Motorsport.com about his expectations for the upcoming race at Singapore, Gasly admitted it’s probably not the best circuit for his car.
“If I look at the numbers…maybe it’s better not to look at the numbers! I’m going with an open mind and we’ll do our best, we’ll prepare in the best way and I hope we we can fight for the top 10 again.”
“First of all, I will try to rest, sleep well and recover physically for this race, because we know it will be very extreme conditions. It’s a track that I like, honestly. I love it I’ve missed this place for the past few years and can’t wait to go back.”
