Joe Biden takes on new moderation of Elon Musk and Twitter content: ‘Lies are rampant around the world’
President Biden mentioned Elon Musk and Twitter during a fundraiser on Friday night, suggesting that its purchase of the platform could allow its users to spew “lies around the world.”
“Elon Musk is going out and buying the output that he’s sending — that’s spewing lies all over the world,” Biden noted. “There are no more editors in America. There are no editors.”
The president seemed to suggest that they were gone Twitter moderation, a claim echoed by several others on the platform who are also critical of Musk.
“How do we expect kids to be able to understand what’s at stake? What’s at stake? So there’s a lot going on, a lot going on. But we have a huge opportunity, a huge opportunity,” Biden added.
Musk has repeatedly said that he wants to remove some of Twitter’s moderation to allow for free speech, but that he will not allow Twitter to “become a free-for-all hell, where anything can be said without consequence.”
He also announced the establishment of a content moderation council.
Biden’s comments are the latest criticism Musk has faced for moderating content on Twitter.
A group of more than 40 organizations, including the NAACP and GLAAD, sent an open letter calling on Twitter’s 20 largest advertisers to stop funding Twitter, as they too argue that Musk’s proposed changes to the platform allow hate, harassment and false content to thrive.
The letter claims that Musk has allowed the platform to be “inundated with hate and misinformation.”
Musk has repeatedly denied these claims.
“Twitter will not censor accurate information about anything,” he tweeted on Friday.
“The reason I bought Twitter is that it is important for the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be discussed in a healthy way, without resorting to violence,” he wrote in an open letter. . “Right now there is a great danger that social media will split into far-right and far-left echo chambers that create more hatred and divide society.”
Biden’s event was held for Illinois Democratic Reps. Lauren Underwood, 14th District, and Sean Casten, 6th District, who are facing tough re-election races.
