Kansas City shooting: 1 dead, up to 6 injured in shooting at Halloween party, police say
One person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting Monday night at a Halloween party at a Kansas City, Kansas, home, police said.
As many as 100 high school students gathered at the home when a group of uninvited guests were asked to leave, and at least one person opened fire, Kansas City Police Chief Carl Oakman said at a news conference. CNN affiliate KMBC.
The suspects were in a dark or gray SUV, Oakman added. No arrests had been made Monday night.
The shooting was another example of gun violence so often interrupts American life in places traditionally considered safe, from schools that shops that hospitals and even funerals. Also on Monday night, at least 13 people were shot dead drive-by shooting in Chicago on a busy corner where people had gathered for a vigil, police said.
In Kansas City, the police chief expressed his frustration over the violence, calling the shooting disturbing and unacceptable.
“These things in the community have to stop. There are too many weapons here. This was a party with high school kids,” Oakman said. “Everybody has a gun now. We have to be smarter than this.”
The shooting was reported shortly after 9 p.m., when the uninvited guests were asked to leave, the chief said. At least one person in the group began shooting into the party crowd, Oakman said.
“The owners asked them to leave. When they left, they started shooting around the house, shooting randomly,” he said.
At least two of the injured are in critical condition, Oakman said.
Information about the party was posted on social media and was “by invitation only,” he said.
