Los Angeles FC won the 2022 Major League Cup for the first time in club history, defeating the Philadelphia Union 3-0 in penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw on Saturday at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

LAFC scored on a goal by Kellyn Acosta in the 28th minute off a free kick from the left corner. With a 1-0 lead at the start of the second half, Union’s Daniel Gazdag equalized in the 59th minute.

The game remained tense until the 83rd minute when Jesús Murillo’s goal put Los Angeles back in the lead. However, that lead would not last too long. Union’s Jack Elliott scored with a header to tie the game again and send it into overtime.

In the 110th minute, LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was booked for a nasty foul on Philadelphia’s Cory Burke. Both players were injured for the foul and the card was changed to red as Crépeau was sent off due to injury. Burke stayed in the game.

LAFC backup goalkeeper John McCarthy came on to finish the game. In stoppage time, Union’s Elliott again played the hero, scoring to give them the lead with more than five minutes remaining.

Just as the Union thought the championship was secured, LAFC’s Gareth Bale scored a late stoppage-time equalizer to force penalties.

McCarthy was the real hero for Los Angeles, stopping all shots in the shootout as LAFC scored three tries, including Ilie Sánchez’s championship-clinching goal.

The home crowd went crazy, and the players and coaches ran onto the field to celebrate the victory.

McCarthy was named the 2022 MLS Cup Most Valuable Player after the match.
