Man Arrested After Cruz Hits Beer Can at Astros Parade
Texas authorities arrested a man Monday who allegedly hit Sen. Ted Cruz (R) with a beer can during the Houston Astros’ World Series championship parade.
In a tweet on MondayThe Houston Police Department (HPD) said an unidentified 33-year-old man threw a beer can at the senator, who was at the parade in the 2400 block of Smith Street in Houston.
Authorities said the beer truck hit Cruz in the “chest/neck area” and that he “did not require medical attention.”
“HPD officers nearby arrested the man without further incident. He was taken to jail and faces assault charges,” the tweet said, adding that they would release the name of the suspect once formal charges are filed.
The Hill reached out to Cruz’s office for comment.
A bunch of videos appeared on social media on Monday showing Astros fans booing Cruz, who was with his family and friends at the championship parade.
In one of the videos, a bystander in the parade is seen throwing a beer can at Cruz, who blocks it with his hand. Cruz’s security detail and authorities then search for which fan threw the drink at Cruz.
The Cruz incident comes as political violence has become a major issue ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. In a Politico-Morning Consult poll released Monday8 in 10 Americans said they are concerned about political violence in the country.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband, Paul Pelosi, was the victim of a brutal intruder attack last month when a man entered the couple’s San Francisco residence with a hammer, saying he was looking for a top House Democrat.
Paul Pelosi, who suffered serious head injuries in the attackhe was recently released from the hospital after a week of recovery.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) publicly condemned incident involving Cruz, saying, “We are a country of voting, not of violence.”
“Don’t throw beer or use violence against someone you disagree with politically,” Swalwell said in a tweet.
The Astros, led by second baseman Jose Altuve and third baseman Alex Bregman, beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 on Saturday to win their second World Series title in five years.
