Manchester United have agreed to leave Cristiano Ronaldo with immediate effect
That business was developing rapidly and the 37-year-old’s departure was complete.
United’s statement read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
The club would like to thank him for his huge contribution in two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future.”
Ronaldo gave a very critical interview before the game World Championship — for which the striker should play Portugal — in which he accused his employers of betrayal and hit out at head coach Erik ten Haag as well as the club’s hierarchy.
Old Trafford released a statement on Thursday which read: “Manchester United have this morning initiated the appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.
“We will not comment further until this process is complete.”
Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United: How he spoiled a magnificent return
All top players sign a premier league employment contract with your teams.
According to that agreement, they are required to “act in accordance with all lawful instructions of any authorized official of the club” and must not “write or say anything which may bring the club … into disrepute … or cause damage for the club”.
Ronaldo said he “felt betrayed” by the club in an interview with Morgan, published in The Sun newspaper.
The striker added that he felt he was being pushed out of United, “not only by the coach (Erik ten Haag), but also by two or three other people at the club”.
He said: “I feel betrayed.
“Some people, I feel, don’t want me here. Not only this year, but last year as well.”
Ronaldo also touched on his relationship with Ten Haag, adding: “I don’t respect him because he doesn’t show me respect.
“If you have no respect for me, I will never have respect for you.”
He also spoke about Ralf Rangnick’s time at the club, who was appointed as interim manager following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season.
The German had considerable success as a director of football but did not manage a team for more than two years before taking over at United last November, with Ronaldo commenting: “If you’re not even a manager, how are you going to be the boss of Manchester United? I’ve never even heard of him.”
Ronaldo told United he wanted to leave last summer if they received a suitable offer, but no satisfactory offer has been forthcoming.
He previously drew criticism from his manager in August when he left early during a friendly against Rayo Vallecano.
Ronaldo was substituted at half-time during the warm-up game and was then filmed off the pitch before the end.
He refused to come on as a substitute during the closing stages of United’s victory last month Tottenham Hotspur.
The Portugal international also missed his side’s final Premier League game before the World Cup break, a 2-1 win Fulham on Sunday, due to illness.
Ronaldo has struggled for form in front of goal this season. The Portuguese international has scored one goal in 10 games in the Premier League this season.
However, he played a more significant role in the Europa League campaign. Ronaldo started all six of United’s matches in the competition, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
In the Premier League, Ronaldo was largely a peripheral figure with just four starts.
