Murray: ‘Nadal is one of the best on all surfaces’

The British surprised for good with a relatively easy victory in the first round of the US Open 2022. Andy Murray he finished Francisco Cerúndolo in straight sets and with few complications. The former world number one spoke in a press conference about his game against the Argentine, how he arrived Raphael Nadal at the last Grand Slam of the year and on the role played by Ivan Lendl as a coach.

I win in three sets

“It was really difficult conditions. At first it was fine, but towards the end it was too hot and humid. I think I did a good job. He could have finished some of the fastest sets, but overall it was a solid performance. It was not an easy first match, I am happy with my role”.

About Rafa Nadal

“He is clearly one of the best players to play against. His achievements this year have been stellar. The match where he turned the tide at the Australian Open was exceptional. He was unlucky in Wimbledon, but these things happen. I know myself and all the injuries I’ve had. It’s part of the sport. It’s unfortunate when it happens at a stage like this, but it’s still one of the best players in the world on all surfaces, as he has shown this year.”

Influence of Ivan Lendl

“The way we train has changed. It’s something more because of the need to protect my body as I get older. He went through the same thing in his career. You adjust your training methods and everything. Not much has changed since the last time we worked together. He is very clear on how I have to play and approach games if I want to get back to the top of the game.”

His next opponent: Emilio Nava

“I hit with him a few days ago so it was good to share the track with him. I saw his game a bit today but to really be on the court with someone and feel his shots is useful when you don’t know much about him. I’m going to watch a video of your meeting today. I know more about him than I did a few days ago, that’s for sure.”
