Newark police shooting: Defendant pleads not guilty

NEWARK (WABC) — The man to be charged with shooting two Newark police officers he has pleaded not guilty as investigators continue to search for the gun he used.

Kendall Howard, 30, faced a judge Thursday afternoon. He is facing two counts of attempted murder and weapons-related crimes.

Howard allegedly pulled a gun and shot both officers Tuesday afternoon outside a building on Van Velsor Place, wounding one in the leg and the other in the shoulder.

One of the injured officers remained hospitalized Thursday morning but is expected to make a full recovery, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said.

Eyewitness News cameras were there Wednesday afternoon when the second officer was released.

Gov. Phil Murphy met with both officers Wednesday and asked the public to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.

Officials praised the efforts of the citizens who helped the injured officers, especially the woman who got out of the car and tried to help one of the officers who was bleeding.

“We can see and hear shots being fired and they’re ducking down there trying to pull this officer to safety. This is real cooperation and support that we have from the community,” Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Frage said.

Police arrived at the apartment building early Tuesday afternoon after a member of the public called and said he recognized the man pictured on the flyer involved in the Oct. 28 shooting.

When they arrived, they encountered Howard in the parking lot as they were leaving the building, police said, and after an argument, a shooting ensued.

Howard then retreated into a building where he remained, apparently in hiding, for more than 20 hours before he was finally caught.
