One high-sugar food that no one over 40 should be eating anymore because it destroys your metabolism
Ah, sugar—our taste buds can’t get enough of it, but our bodies can better without it. While there’s no denying the joy of treating yourself to a sweet treat every now and then, consuming too much sugar on a regular basis can be detrimental to your overall health and should be avoided as much as possible if you want to lose weight and/or maintain a healthy metabolism. And while processed, sugary foods are never a good idea, they can be especially harmful to your health if you eat them for breakfast, as they tend to lack the fuel your body needs for the day and lead to blood sugar spikes later. . In fact, there’s one sugary breakfast food that health experts warn you should avoid at all costs: breakfast cereal.
To learn more about the health risks of regularly munching on sugary cereal, we spoke to health experts Dana Hunnesdoctor of science, dietician and author Recipe for survival, and Varsha Khatri, nutritionist from Illuminated Health. They broke down the downsides of this terrifyingly delicious meal blood sugar spikes to a slow metabolism. Find them all below!
Few breakfasts are as quick and convenient (and delicious) as a bowl of cereal. Who could possibly turn down a bowl of sugary goodness that takes seconds to pour? Unfortunately, however, if you’re trying to lose weight (or just keep your overall health in check), it may be necessary to kick the grain habit. Hunnes tells us that “things like Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, and Frozen Flakes” are “made with few (if any) whole grains and have a lot of sugar in them,” making them terrible breakfast choices.
Khati agrees, noting that “cereals are one of the foods with the most sugar.” And if you think you’re safe by choosing boxes that look healthier or are labeled as low-sugar, you might be wrong. “Even cereals that claim to be ‘low sugar’ are actually high in added sweeteners,” she warns. Say it ain’t so!
So what are the dangers of eating high sugar foods like cereal? First, blood sugar levels are likely to rise, leading to increased sugar cravings later in the day. Khatri explains this: “When you start your day with anything high in sugar/sweeteners, you’re more likely to crave sugar or other sweet foods throughout the day, which means you’re more likely to snack just to keep your blood sugar levels up. ” We all know that processed sugar isn’t good for your overall health—and it’s especially bad if you’re trying to lose a few pounds.
Aside from these blood sugar spikes, cravings, and overeating, processed foods like grains also provide your body with very little nutritional value while consuming calories. Since grains offer virtually no fiber or protein, your body “barely burns calories” when you digest them, which can seriously affect your metabolism over time. In addition, lack of satiety will only exacerbate the problem of cravings and overeating. All in all, it’s a nightmare for anyone trying to lose weight and stay in shape.
If you’re really in a rush and have to go for a quick cereal, choosing varieties that offer a good amount of whole grains and fiber is always your best bet. In fact, making your own naturally sweetened granola to have on hand for those quick mornings is a great way to stay in control of what’s going on in your body. While it may take a little more initial effort than throwing a box of cereal in the cart at the grocery store, it will be worth it in the end!
