Russell adds another podium at Monza: ‘We have to be happy’

The Brits rode in no man’s land and got all the penalties

Seventh podium of 2022 and already only seven points away from being third in the World Cup

George Russell added another podium, his seventh of the season, by finishing third at Monza. The Briton rode in no man’s land on Sunday, with less pace than the first two, but with the speed necessary to stay behind all the “roosters” that penalized this circuit.

Russell stresses that right now the speed of Mercedes doesn’t matter to him, he thinks it’s essential to maintain that consistency and continue to get on the podium. Performance this weekend hasn’t been ideal, but despite that they take third place and a good booty of World Cup points. Singapore and Suzuka will be better circuits.

“I told the team on the radio that it doesn’t matter if we’re fast or slow, we have to keep getting those podiums. We’re not where we want to be, but we can watch those last three races and see that we achieved two podiums and a fourth place. We have to be happy with that,” Russell admitted as soon as he got out of the car.

Russell maintains that to try to fight with the two leaders, it was essential to try another strategy and they carried out a soft-hard which did not change the situation. George was in no man’s land throughout the race, but in the closing stages his pace was strong enough not to come under pressure from Carlos Sainz.

We had to try something different to fight with Max and Charles, but they were too fast for us today. I’m glad we tried something different. These are incredibly sad times in the world and for Britons too, but what a life the Queen has had and it should be celebrated,” George said.

With this podium, Russell is only seven points behind Sergio Pérez in the fight for third place in the World Championship. The Briton has shown incredible consistency throughout the season and with this result he is already starting to put pressure on the Red Bulls’ second, who is still far from his version of the start of the year.
