Schumer predicts Democrats will retain majority in Senate and “maybe even pick up seats”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) remains optimistic that Democrats will be able to defy recent a wave of enthusiasm for Republicans and retain their majority in the Senate, The Associated Press reports.
Schumer believes Democratic candidates will be able to beat their opponents in tightly contested states and even sees the potential to flip some seats.
“It’s tight,” Schumer said in an interview with AP. “I believe Democrats will hold the Senate and maybe even pick up seats.”
Schumer’s safe forecast comes as support and enthusiasm for Democrats lag behind gains in polls for the GOP. Republicans benefit from strong voter interest in economic concerns and their dissatisfaction with the performance of President Biden. Maintenance control of the Senate has been an uphill battle for Democrats from the start, and the historically dominant party tends to lose seats in Congress in midterm elections.
Regardless, Schumer is counting on a strong voter turnout on Tuesday to secure a victory for his party and told interviewers that Democrats have advantages in each of the critical battleground states. He emphasized that Democratic candidates are “defying the political environment,” dispelling the narrative that Republicans will quickly take control of the Senate.
He believes his party’s endurance against the odds suggests that voters “see how extreme these Republican candidates are, and they don’t like it. And second, they see that Democrats are talking to them about the issues they care about, and that we’ve accomplished a lot on things.”
