Spa renews for F1 from 2023
As we highlighted this morning, Spa will finally be on the 2023 calendar. Belgian GP promoters and Liberty Media have reached an agreement to renew the contract for just one year, 2023, after the long-awaited return to Kyalami – to have a test on the African continent – proved impossible for the next year.
Moreover, uncertainty about the future of the Chinese GP persists. Authorities there continue to try to control COVID and other details also mean that the long-awaited return of the Asian country, currently the world’s largest market, remains unknown.
An official statement from FOM reads that “Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar after reaching an agreement to extend our partnership together. Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due time.”
This does not however solve the permanent presence of the Belgian GP – or rather of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit – one of the last great jewels in the history of motorsport – in the championship. However, the situation is similar to what Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya went through recently. With the Spanish installation, an extension year was agreed in 2021, this 2022, which gave time to negotiate a five-year agreement with the Catalan track.
Although no date has been announced, the feeling in the paddock is that Spa will have to bring their celebration forward to June as there are agreements with other tracks.
This year, the promoters of Spa have introduced important changes in the safety measures of the circuit, certain infrastructures and for better traffic management. Moreover, they organized various parallel actions on the same circuit to make it more attractive for the fans.
