Szafnauer asks Piastri for more ‘integrity’
Team boss says Alpine has kept its end of the bargain
Wait for the resolution of the Contract Recognition Office to act
The “Piastri case” is still not elucidated and is much talked about. Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer has assured that they have fulfilled their part of the “deal” and accuses Piastri of lacking “integrity”.
Szafnauer is awaiting resolution from the Formula 1 Contract Recognition Office to act. Indeed, if finally Piastri does not run with them next season, Alpine does not rule out asking him for financial compensation for all the money invested in his training.
“The right thing for us is to go to the Contract Acknowledgment Office on Monday, see how it works and then start looking at serious negotiations,” Szafnauer told Sky Sports F1.
The team manager assures that Piastri has already signed a contract with another team and that this team is none other than McLaren, as all the rumors of recent weeks indicate. He also explained that Piastri had an “agreement” with Alpine that while the French team complied, the driver did not, so he is asking for more “integrity”.
“He is a promising young driver who has not yet raced in Formula 1 and My wish for Oscar is that he has a little more integrity“, he stated.
“He signed a paper in November and We have done our best to hold our end of the bargain to prepare him for Formula 1. His part of the contract was to drive for us or take a seat where we would place him for the next three years.”
“I wish Oscar remembered what he signed in November,” he said.
Szafnauer is convinced that Alpine is right in this matter and states that there was no time limit as stated. “I’ve seen both sides of the argument and we are sure of what Oscar has signed with us in November. I rarely like to talk about the details of drivers’ contracts.”
“But I can say two things. Firstly, there was no indication that by July 31 we must have done certain things, there was no such thing. The July 31st deadline I read all the time is fictionalis not in the signed contract”, aimed.
“The length of the contract is until 2024, with an option in 2023. And there’s a lot more, but I don’t like to talk about the details,” he said.
Following the announcement of Ricciardo’s departure from McLaren at the end of the season, the Australian is standing as a candidate to fill the vacant Alpine seat. Szafnauer explained that they haven’t made any decision on that yet, although he assures the team speaks highly of him.
“The team talks a lot about him. We haven’t had those strategic discussions. I asked the engineering team about it and they all spoke highly of his driving skills and motivation for the team.”
Any problems with the free vacancy at Alpine came after Alonso left for Aston Martin, which Szafnauer also spoke about, although he assured the team must now look to the future.
“Fernando is a double world champion who continues to ride at a high level. Let’s hope he doesn’t last long because he is leaving,” he stressed.
“We have to look forward now and fill the vacant seat with the best driver,” he said in conclusion.
