Tennessee election officials are vowing to find the cause of the error after hundreds of early votes were cast in the wrong races
Tennessee election officials said hundreds of citizens who voted in the wrong congressional election due to a redistricting accident would be able to cast provisional ballots on Election Day and promised to address the root cause of the error when the election is over.
It was announced by the Davidson County Election Commission FOX17 Nashville that 438 voters were affected by the error, and officials worked “endless hours” to check polling stations and ensure they had the correct ballots for Tuesday’s election.
“Now, in order to do that, some individuals can vote, instead of voting at the voting machines, you’ll be offered a yellow envelope with your name on it with your specific ballot,” said Jeff Roberts, Nashville precinct election administrator.
Roberts said officials will have to wait until Tuesday to determine how voters cast ballots in the wrong precincts.
“Then we’ll sit down and see what caused the problem to begin with, you know, ‘where did it originate?’ So when we do redistricting again in 10 years, we don’t go through this issue, with voters going into the wrong, misapportioned precinct,” Roberts said.
Election officials struggled for days to fix Davidson County’s voting system after the Associated Press first reported that nearly 200 Tennesseans voted in incorrect elections, while 16 voted in the wrong state Senate race and six voted in the wrong House race.
Earlier this year, Republican lawmakers split multiple districts across Davidson County as he redrew Nashville’s congressional maps in hopes of flipping the Democratic seat.
As a result, voters now live in fragmented units, and some were inaccurate grouped in the wrong district. However, according to the county, no questions were raised about voting in the wrong race during the primary election, which was held in August.
