Arthritis is a condition that affects many people, especially as they age. While certain risk factors are associated with the development of arthritis, such as age, gender, family history or if you have suffered an acute injury, your diet can also seriously affect the severity of your arthritis symptoms.

Some foods are known to aggravate arthritis and should be avoided whenever possible to prevent flare-ups.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the joints. You can easily understand the meaning of the condition by breaking down the word “arthritis.” Its prefix comes from the Greek word “arthron”, which means joint, while the suffix “-itis” means inflammation.

Although arthritis can affect almost any joint in the human body, it it usually affects the knees, hips, spine and fingers. The likelihood of developing arthritis increases as you age, although you can get it at any age and condition it disproportionately affects women. Rough 20 percent of Canadians over the age of 15 they were diagnosed with arthritis.

Why do certain foods cause arthritis?

While no single food will cause arthritis or to trigger an attack, your diet as a whole can significantly affect the severity of your condition.

Certain foods have been found to have inflammatory properties, so it is wise to avoid these foods as much as possible. Some foods, such as white rice, they contain compounds called cytokines, which promote inflammation. If you regularly include them in your diet, your arthritis may worsen.

Many health professionals recommend adopting an anti-inflammatory diet which focuses on significantly reducing the number of foods that can directly or indirectly worsen inflammation. However, it’s important to remember that the foods that trigger arthritis inflammation can vary depending on the type of arthritis you have.

Foods that are bad for arthritis

Certain foods can affect arthritis directly and indirectly. Consider eliminating the following foods from your diet if you have this condition.

1. Dairy products

Dairy products contain the so-called protein casein which can stimulate inflammation around the joints, worsening of arthritis symptoms. Moreover, some dairy products such as cheese and butter are high in fat, which can contribute to weight gain and increased pressure on your wrists.

2. High fructose corn syrup

A clinical trial evaluated the negative effects of drinking sucrose-sweetened soft drinks (SSSD) and showed that drinks with processed sugars directly stimulates the production of uric acid. Not just uric acid promotes inflammation, but also induces insulin resistance.

3. Saturated fats

Saturated fats and trans fats are bad for people with arthritis because they increase inflammation levels in the body and contribute to other health risks like heart disease. Additionally, saturated fat indirectly affects arthritis by contributing to weight gain.

4. Refined sugars

Refined sugars are problematic for several reasons. First, it is established that they have inflammatory effects in the bloodstream. They also contribute to weight gain, which can indirectly worsen arthritis.

5. Pasta

Eating traditional pasta can make arthritis worse because it contains gluten. when eating gluten triggers an inflammatory immune response. Instead, opt for non-wheat alternatives like brown rice, lentil pasta, or quinoa.

6. Red meat

Red meat is best avoided by people with gout, as it contains purine, which the body converts into uric acid. Gout is a consequence excess uric acid in the bloodstream.

Other foods that contain purines include pork, organ meats and some seafood.

7. Processed food

Processed foods are packaged and sold in stores, usually containing more ingredients. These foods adversely affect the symptoms of arthritis because they are hard for our body to process and digest.

Although arthritis can be caused by an injury or develop over time, people living with arthritis should consider avoiding foods that promote inflammation and worsen symptoms of the condition.
