The classy Netherlands knocked the USA out of the World Cup in the last 16 stage

The USA was knocked out of the World Cup by the Netherlands in the round of 16 as the young Americans were taught a lesson in clinical finishing.

Christian Pulisic missed a great chance early on and the Netherlands then surged ahead thanks to two fluid moves as Memphis Depay completed a fine 20-pass sequence, then Daley Blind scored a near-copy to make it 2-0 straight into half-time.

Haji Wright made it 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining, but Holland wrapped up the victory moments later when the brilliant Denzel Dumfries finished brilliantly for Louis van Gaal’s loose and determined side.

The Netherlands will now face the winner of Argentina and Australia in the quarter-finals, while the USA will head home with their heads held high and valuable tournament experience in their back pocket.

The future is bright, but the US must make the most of it

There is no shame in losing to this Dutch side. They have class in their squad and Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Virgil van Dijk and excellent wing backs (Dumfries and Blind) were at ease in the last 16. This young American team, the youngest team in the last 16, looked uncomfortable throughout and were sloppy with the ball and simply couldn’t capitalize on their big chances. Kristijan Pulisic missed a great chance early on, and the Dutch took advantage of theirs. Their game plan then was to sit back and repel the US and that’s what they did. The experience and class of the Netherlands shone through, but this game, and this tournament, had plenty of positives for the USA.

They are a clinical forward away from a deep run in 2026 and this young side will likely see seven or eight of the same starters on home soil as they had in Qatar. Whether or not Gregg Berhalter is the boss for this side is a discussion for another day (would a more attacking setup make a difference? What about playing Reyna and Aaronson more? Should Haji Wright have started against the Dutch?), but this young core? The pool of players can be added carefully and the USA must make the most of their experience from 2022 and take another step forward for 2026 in order to contend with the top 10 teams on the planet. They need to be clinical and calmer when their moment comes. They exceeded expectations in Qatar, but there is still a sense of what could have been. That’s a good thing. As long as you make the most of it next time.

Stars of the show

Denzel Dumfries: Great assist for the second goal and a nice finish for the third. He often pushed forward but also did his defensive work while clearing the line. What a display from the Inter Milan right back.

Daley Blind: Holland’s other wing-back had an incredible game as he scored and assisted and kept Weah and Dest quiet on that flank. What a display from a veteran.

Key stories, players to watch closely

The Netherlands are the fourth best team in the ELO rating and eighth in FIFA’s much-discussed rankings, while the Yanks are ranked 20th by ELO and 16th by FIFA.

So the big story is whether the role of favorite affects the Dutch at all, having carried that label against Ecuador, Senegal and Qatar, and whether the Yankees can effectively channel their underdog energy as they did against England.

The big question, of course, is whether Kristijan Pulisic is 100%, 75% or less after the pelvic contusion suffered against Iran. While Tim Weah was very good, and defenders Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson were great, Pulisic is undoubtedly the focus of the defenders and the American attack. It’s also worth watching if Weston McKennie finally has a game-changing performance at this tournament, as the Juventus man has been working his way back to full fitness throughout the World Cup.

The Dutch are delighted with the play of 23-year-old Cody Gakpo, who has scored in every game. Virgil’s back line of Dijk, Jurrien Timber and Nathan Ake was good, allowing just one goal, while Matthijs de Ligt started the first game in place of Timber and Stefan de Vrij is on the bench. With Frenkie de Jong in the center of the park, this Dutch team is very strong even if it is not the old Netherlands.

Holland vs USA all time

The The USMNT scored a memorable win over the Dutch in 2015 under Jurgen Klinsmann, trailing 1-0 and 3-1 before winning 4-3 with goals from Danny Williams and Bobby Wood in the 89th and 90th minutes to claim victory. Gyasi Zardes and John Brooks also scored in the game.

The Dutch had won all four meetings before that, with all five of those matches being friendlies played between 1998 and 2015.

Netherlands vs USA, World Cup history

The Dutch have never faced the USA at the World Cup, and Johan Cruyff’s home certainly has a more illustrious tournament history.

The Netherlands, like the USMNT, missed the tournament in 2018. That absence came after finishing third in 2014 and losing the 2010 final to Spain. They have lost a total of three finals, two in the mid-1970s, and have not lost a World Cup game outside of penalties since that 1-0 loss to Spain in 2010.

The The USMNT’s best finish of the tournament ended with a controversial loss to Germany in the quarter-finals in 2002, but the Yanks have now reached the knockout rounds the last three times they have participated in the World Cup. They won only in the knockout round in 2002.
