The man pretended to be a Stanford student and lived in the dorms
The man allegedly posed as a Stanford University student and lived in the dorms for nearly a year, school officials said.
Stanford’s Department of Public Safety “cited, removed him from campus and issued a restraining order” to the man last Thursday, according to statement from the university, after he was found living in the basement of the dorm.
The man, identified by the school as William Curry, is accused of squatting in university housing “several times” since December. The first time he was found living on campus, he was “reported for breaking the law and removed.”
“Since then, the university’s Department of Public Safety has received multiple letters of evasion, which is a prerequisite for inducing someone to trespass on campus, to present him to Mr. Curry, but was unable to locate him until the most recent incident on October 27,” Dee Mostofi, spokesman university, he told BuzzFeed News.
Curry, who is 20 and from Alabama, was caught last week after allegedly stealing a television from a basement dorm room, according to Stanford Daily.
Beyond just staying on campus, Curry’s alleged shenanigans went far deeper. He reportedly befriended many of his supposed classmates, claiming to some that he had transferred from Duke University, and listed himself as attending Stanford on Facebook, Instagram and Tinder.
He even dated a student for several months, he says school paper, telling the young woman that he is a transfer student. After they broke up in June, she filed a complaint against Curry with campus police, alleging he stalked and harassed her.
Mostofi confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Curry’s ex-girlfriend reported him to Stanford’s Department of Public Safety, saying she was concerned “that he had access to her phone password and was able to track her.” “A report was filed, but at the time there did not appear to be any harassment or stalking. She also stated that she did not fear for her safety,” Mostofi said.
Curry did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment. But in an interview with Stanford Dailyhe denied his ex-girlfriend’s allegations and claimed he couldn’t “remember any other time” he was removed from campus before the latest incident.
When asked why he played the Stanford student, Curry told the school newspaper that “honestly, I really couldn’t [say]” and “just lived a normal life at Stanford, meeting people, hanging out, like you do in college.” Curry claimed he convinced his high school friends and even his parents that he was actually attending Stanford and said he was making money playing poker and trading cryptocurrencies.
