The United States is footing the bill for the Czech Republic to upgrade 45 Soviet-era tanks for use in the conflict in Ukraine – part of the Biden administration’s $400 million military aid package for the country, the Pentagon said Friday.

The US aid package also includes funds to refurbish and donate an undisclosed number of the country’s aging Hawk air defense systems. Also included is funding for the renewal of 250 M117 armored vehicles, 40 riverboats, surveillance and training systems for Ukrainian troops.
The deal for Soviet-era T-72 tanks includes upgrades to their armor and optics, it said report. The Czech Republic and Poland also sent old Russian-made tanks to Ukraine to help with the war effort.
“We are grateful to everyone for supporting our values, for believing in Ukraine and our victory,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a tweet on Saturday.
