Tsunoda renews with AlphaTauri for the 2023 season
The 22-year-old Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda will race for a third consecutive season in Formula 1 with AlphaTauri in 2023, the Italian team announced on Thursday.
“The Japanese driver has quickly risen through the ranks of the lower categories and has shown in his first season in F1 that he is a driver to be reckoned with,” explains the statement from AlphaTauri.
“I want to thank Red Bull, Honda and Scuderia AlphaTauri for continuing to give me the opportunity to drive in F1. Having moved to Italy last year to be closer to the factory, I now feel really integrated into team,” Tsunoda said.
AlphaTauri is a satellite team of Red Bull, designed as a launch pad for the primary team, leading the championship thanks to the performances of defending champion Max Verstappen.
Tsunoda has participated in 36 Grands Prix, his best result being a 4th place in Abu Dhabi in 2021. He finished his first season as 14th in the world, far from his teammate, the Frenchman Pierre Gasly, 9th. In 2022, with a less powerful car, Tsunoda is 16th and Gasly 11th.
For Franz Tost, team principal, Tsunoda is a “very talented” driver who “deserves a place in F1”. For the Austrian leader, “a driver needs at least three years to become fully familiar with Formula 1, so I’m happy that he has time to show his full potential”.
