US Open 2022: Carlos Moy on Nadal’s new serve: ‘It was a change or there was a very high risk of relapse’
carlos moy He wasn’t at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, but he flew to New York shortly after to accompany Rafael Nadal in his bid to add the twenty-third “Grand Slam” of his career.
Nadal confessed after his first match that he had slightly modified his service mechanics to preserve the abs where he suffered a break in the past Wimbledon and it did not allow him to skip to play the semi-finals with Nick Kyrgios.
Moy, speaking to atptour.com, speaks of the need for change: “It was to change service or there was a very high risk of relapse. You go to war with the weapons you have. We thought it would reach Canada, but it didn’t. I just arrived in Cincinnati. Now, let’s go day by day. For the moment everything is controlled, with certain variations. In this framework, we believe that Rafa will be competitive“.
The coach admits having been forced to change the course of the ball because of his student’s difficulties in performing the usual service: “In training we saw that it was difficult for him to do the front serve, to get the ball upstairs, to do this extension. To protect the area, we switched to a service that would allow it to be competitive“.
