US Open 2022: Casper Ruud: ‘I’m disappointed not to be number 1, but being number 2 is not so bad’
Norwegian Casper Ruud assured this Sunday, after losing the US Open final to Spaniard Carlos Alcarazthat it hurts him not to have been able to reach the first position in the world rankings, but he felt that being “number two is not so bad”.
The US Open final involved the title and first place in the standings, and Alcaraz took the double prize winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1) and 6-3 in three hours and 20 minutes.
“Carlos and I knew what we were playing for and it’s good that the finalists are number one and two in the world. I’m disappointed not to be number one, but number two isn’t so bad,” Ruud said during the on-pitch interview.
“It is incredibly impressive what he has already achieved. Sometimes it’s hard to believe you’re a teenager. He is four years younger than me. go in the right direction. He has shown fighting spirit and the will to win by returning match points before. Things went in his favor on some occasions. Right now he is the best player in the world from my point of view. He deserves this position after excellent results. I’m proud to be number two. I’m happy about that and I’ll keep chasing after my first ‘big’ and number one.”added Ruud after falling to the Spaniard.
The Norwegian, trained at the Rafa Nadal Academyexpressed gratitude to his family for being “always” for him and felt it’s his credit if he’s been able to achieve great results lately.
