US Open 2022: Garbie Muguruza misses two match points and falls in the third round against Kvitova
Garbie Muguruza (9) could not qualify this Saturday for the round of 16 of the US Open, which would have meant equaling his best result of the tournament (2017 and 2021). He did everything to win, but ended up losing.
After beating two lesser rivals like Clara Tauson and Linda Fruhvirtova, The pupil of Conchita Martnez yielded to Petra Kvitova (21) 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 (10). Heads or tails, he got tails.
The Czech is historically one of Muguruza’s most uncomfortable players. And it is that he has already dominated the previous ones between the two by 5-1. Only Karolina Pliskova, nine times, and Elina Svitolina, seven, add more wins against the two-major champion.
Kvitova went from leading 4-2 and serving in the first set give up the first set with an arsenal of double faults (6).
Garbie took advantage of each of the gifts that came from the other side of the net. In the following, the equality was maintained because the service prevailed over the rest.
Kvitova, who had just qualified for the WTA 1000 Finals in Cincinnati and then got engaged to her trainer Jiri Vanek, repeated the scenario. It was 4-2 but, this time, he kept the advantage to sign the tables on the scoreboard.
Muguruza appeared to sign the sentence with a second ‘break’ in game six of the third set. His rival lost 5-2 and was able to make match five. The result went to super ‘tie break’ after Petra saved two match points: direct serve and forehand to the net.
Kvitova prevailed, tempering her nerves better to collect her sixth victory against the Spaniards on the fourth attempt. The 50 unforced errors penalized him little because he also scored 43 winning shots. Now the local Jessica Pegula (8 years old), executioner of the Chinese Yue Yuan, is waiting for him.
Garbie, meanwhile, falling out of the “top10” and missing big goals the rest of the way. It should be remembered that she is the current WTA master and is currently ranked 52nd in the 2022 race. There are no Spaniards left in the US Open women’s draw.
