US Open 2022: Kyrgios beats Medvedev and plays the “idiot” by giving a point that “will come out everywhere”
Ehe controversial Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios offered his best version this Sunday and eliminated the Russian in the round of 16 of the US Open Daniel Medvedevworld number one and current Grand Slam champion.
Kyrgios won 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2 in two hours and 53 minutes.
In the quarter-finals, he will face another Russian, Karen Khachanov, who beat Spaniard Pablo Carreo by 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3 in three hours and 21 minutes.
Often in the news more for his escapades and mischievous manners on the court than for his formidable tennis skills, Kyrgios nevertheless gave a real recital against Medvedev in Sunday’s showpiece match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, on center court in the US Open.
But aside from its spectacular shots, the game had it all.
‘Warning’ Kyrgios for throwing his racket and shouting an obscenity
Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Kyrgios threw down his racket and received a ‘warning’ for shouting an obscenity.
Kyrgios loses his mind for making a joke and gives Medvedev a point
Even so, the controversial tennis player’s most unusual moment was when he crossed the net next to his rival and hit the ball when he had already won the point but the ball had yet to bounced off the ground, so he lost that point.
“It’s going to go all over the place and I’m going to look like an idiot,” Kyrgios joked during the on-pitch interview after the game.
Medvedev’s complaints about Kyrgios’ team
Medvedev also had his share of glory in the heated game: he complained about what Kyrgios’ side were saying from the stands and also blamed the Aussie for not getting a ‘warning’ after he threw a ball into the stands.
In any case, the mood between them also left moments of friendly sportsmanship, like on one occasion when the Russian approached Kyrgios’ side to inquire about him after suffering a spectacular crash.
