Wrinkles from the Big Bang may have magnetized the universe

As cosmic strings—exotic wrinkles in space-time left over from the earliest moments of the Big Bang—travel, they can trigger the formation of magnetic fields in their wake, new research shows. These magnetic fields would then permeate the universe, thus explaining the magnetization of galaxies and clusters, scientists suggest in a new paper.

Almost every substantial object in the universe has a magnetic field. Smaller objects, such as planets and stars, generate their own magnetic fields from dynamo action within them, where eddy currents of electrically charged plasma force weak magnetic fields to bend around themselves.
